Art Film 'Four Women'
June 30, 2016
Young filmmaker Nadeem Din-Gabisi invited me to participate in a project based on Nina Simone's 'Four Women' (a song close to my heart as the theme to our production of For Colored Girls) and we shot around West London for my segment. W1mn is a beautiful tribute to black womanhood, and I was honoured to be involved.
w1mn is a film, i have been working on, inspired by Nina Simone’s composition “Four Women”.
Upon repeated listens to the song, i was inspired to paint the thoughts and feelings of four blk w1mn, two in New York and two in London. Nina Simone’s song is quite stark and dark in its depiction, and i wanted to flip it and, show light, bright, bright light which is also a part of the narrative. The film can be seen as a response to Nina Simone's metaphysical call.
The film is a thanku to the spirit of Nina Simone and was made, to get us to look with our, oju ode (outer eyes) and our oju inu (inner eyes) to see the ewa ode (external beauty) and ewa inu (inner beauty) in these four (and all!) blk w1mn.
Peace to you Nina Simone!
